Chapter Eight

Grigoris had hated leaving Aaden. Unfortunately, as a gargoyle, he could feel it when sunrise drew near, and he needed to get to a safe place to roost. After licking his claiming bite, sealing the mark and leaving a faint scar behind, he’d roused his mate. He’d used his own t-shirt to clean up his human before extracting one more promise from Aaden that he would join him at the estate that evening. Finally, he’d had to leave.

After waking from roost, Grigoris anticipated the coming evening. He prayed to whatever god cared to listen that his mate followed through. He wanted his lover and planned to complete the bonding that evening.

I can’t protect him from hunters if I can’t turn human.

While Grigoris figured he was pushing Aaden, he had to believe it was for the best. He also had to make certain it was perfect for his lover. With that thought in mind, Grigoris went through the process of setting up his room to be the perfect holiday lair of seduction.

Grigoris started a fire in the fireplace. He spread a blanket before the hearth. Setting up a small Christmas tree in the corner, he quickly decorated it with a couple strings of twinkle lights. After tucking a small wrapped box under the tree, he hung garland around the mantel and over the doorways. After tacking a number of small sprigs of greenery to the ceiling, he headed downstairs to get a carafe of hot chocolate.

“Hey, Sumak,” Grigoris greeted the small, purple gargoyle. “Any idea when Andre and Aaden are supposed to be coming.”

Before Grigoris had left Aaden, his human had told him that he’d swing out with Andre. He figured it was part of the theory of moral support, strength in numbers, that sort of thing. As long as his mate was comfortable, Grigoris didn’t mind.

“They had football practice until seven,” Sumak told him. He glanced at the clock, then returned his focus to Grigoris and shrugged. “Any time now, I suppose.”

Grigoris glanced at the clock, too.

Seven-twenty-three. Good.

“If you hear from Andre about Aaden changing his mind or anything, will you text me?” After Sumak nodded, Grigoris added, “Or if they arrive before I get back here.”

“Sure, Grigoris,” Sumak responded. “If I hear anything, I’ll let you know.”

After thanking Sumak, Grigoris grabbed a to go box and filled it with a dozen sausage, egg, and cheese biscuit sandwiches. He remembered how hungry Aaden had been and wanted to make certain he had something available for him. He supposed he could take him into the dining hall, but he didn’t want to overwhelm him.

And wanting him all to myself has nothing to do with it.

Grigoris pushed the stray thought away. He grabbed a carafe of hot chocolate, then jogged back to his room. Once he dropped off his food and drink, he knew he had one more stop to make before hiding away from the world with his mate for the night.

Leaving his suite once more, Grigoris strode swiftly to the west wing of the estate.
